Former West Orange Councilman Kevin Keogh is running the New York City Marathon this Sunday
inspired by his daughter’s birthday wish. Five-year-old Kaleigh Keogh was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and Hypo-Thyroidism when she was 3. According to her mom
Shannon
she could not possibly be braver about her “stickies” — shots — that she needs about seven times a day or the additional “little stickies” she endures in her fingers with her blood glucose monitor. When Kaleigh blew out her five birthday candles this year and made her wish
she said “I just wish these diabetes would go away
daddy.” Kaleigh’s dad promised her that he will get rid of her diabetes and the idea for Kaleigh’s Wish was born. Although the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is a great organization that sponsors annual diabetes walks for raising money
Kevin wanted to do a one-time fundraiser which would show his daughter that anything is possible — with determination. According to Kevin
anyone who knows him would have laughed if he told them he was going to run the New York City marathon this year. Months of training and 45 pounds have since passed since the candles were blown out and Kevin will run the marathon on Sunday. The timing is perfect
as November is National Diabetes month
