• Project: Theoretical and practical investigation on the influence of surface slope in chromatic confocal microscopy. • Description: The influence on optical design parameters using Zemax and Matlab was studied and a unique calibration technique was developed.

• Project: Effects of thermal post-treatment at optical and mechanical properties of ion-beam-sputtered single- and multilayer. • Description: Systematic investigation of several hundred probes using different characterization tools. Analyzing data led to patent that protects ion-beam-sputtered coatings against mechanical stress.

• Project: Development and realization of a measuring system to determine the refractive index of liquid glues. • Description: Setting up an experiment to accurately measure the refractive index of liquid glues. Fabrication of optical components and first hands-on experiences with LabView.

Studying the behavior of light in a range of different types of twisted photonic crystal fibres, in the process uncovering some surprising phenomena (orbital angular momentum,...) and exploring potential applications.
