Scott Scurfield

Represent Social Security claimants in hearings before federal Administrative Law Judges. Involved at all stages of preparing their cases for hearing, from meeting with clients to gathering the medical records needed to support their cases to preparing them for the hearings to representing them in the hearings. Also represent injured persons in litigated claims against at-fault drivers, landlords, and other defendants.

Helped the firm start up a bankruptcy practice and represented bankruptcy debtors in Chapter 7 and 13 filings. Also represented some of the firm’s automobile accident clients, from filing suit to mediations to jury trial.

Functioned as defense counsel in civil litigation matters on behalf of insureds of major insurance carriers. Represented these defendants from the initial stages of litigation through discovery, settlement negotiations, mediation conferences, and trials. Ensured the timely filing of responsive pleadings and discovery documents, and advised insurance adjusters and their insureds (my clients) at all phases of the litigation process.

This was first position practicing full time as insurance defense counsel, representing defendants insured by major carriers including Zurich, Travelers, and MetLife. Was part of the defense team for West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc., a manufacturer of rubber and plastic medical devices, at whose Kinston, NC rubber compounding and manufacturing plant an explosion occurred in 2003 killing several employees and injuring dozens more. Various claims (including product liability and class action) were resolved.

Was a partner in a small-town general practice. Areas included bankruptcy, civil litigation, real estate, family law, and estate planning. This was essentially a solo practice personally responsible for both practicing law and managing the business end of the practice, including billing and collections. Had started out with the firm when known as Ogle, Policicchio & Frantz as a summer intern while in law school from 1985 to 1988, then became an associate upon admission to the bar in 1988, then became a part

Was one of three part-time public defenders providing legal representation to indigent persons charged with crimes ranging from summary offenses to capital murder. Responsible for maintaining a case load of several hundred cases, meeting with clients, advising them through the criminal system and helping them evaluate resolutions to their situations, whether by guilty pleas or trials. Tried dozens of cases to juries and obtained "not guilty" verdicts well over half of the cases tried.
