Medela: A Successful History
For more than 50 years, Medela has developed from a small family owned company in Switzerland to a global producer of the most technologically advanced breastpumps and Medical Vacuum Solutions.
Further Development of our Breastfeeding Products
Throughout our history, we have been pushing the boundaries to create safe and efficient products based on research. In the business unit Breastfeeding we have introduced the world's first quality manual breastpump in 1983, and the world's first phototherapy system for the treatment of neonatal jaundice. More recently, we introduced the 2-Phase Expression Technology, the world's only research-based breastpump technology that mimics a baby's natural sucking rhythm, resulting in getting mothers more milk in less time.
Expertise in Medical Technology
The business unit "Healthcare" offers innovative solutions for digital thoracic drainage systems, Negative Pressure Wound Therapy and Professional Vacuum Systems. In the "Healthcare" business unit, we have developed Thopaz, the groundbreaking research-based digital thoracic drainage system. It supports the early mobilization of the patient after thoracic surgery.
Our key to Success
A key aspect of our past and present success is a relentless focus on research-based medical technology, which will ensure, on an ongoing base, innovations in the fields of Breastfeeding and Medical Vacuum Solutions.

Attractively designed products
Aesthetics and design are important, also in medical technology. Medela offers customers products which stand out not only through their functions but also their attractive design. If people like something, they will also use it. The Medela company philosophy is: Products which are cleverly designed can be used more easily.
International design awards
Medela works with renowned product designers. We integrate them in the development process in which they incorporate their unique flair for form and colour and detail design. It is a high art form to be able to combine the practical with the beautiful. Medela has mastered this – several products have already been awarded international design awards. We want to improve people’s quality of life with our products! That’s one part of the Medela company philosophy. "Looking at nature is not a fashion trend – but the most fascinating story ever to be discovered. Spending time to look at natural behaviour and then using what you have learned to develop something truly helpful for mother and baby lasts more than a lifetime."
