I caught fire doing infrastructure resiliency. Studying computer science always felt like a good fit for me. However, I had trouble getting excited about the content taught, which was often more theoretical in nature. So I looked elsewhere and applied for an internship in the corporate environment. The spark I was missing ignited when I sat down to analyze a distributed system problem. What happens if I press the red delete button for a service? How does the software handle it? Suddenly, thinking about system up-time and applying some of that analytical compute-sciency thinking to optimize got a lot more exciting and fun. Luckily this spark also transferred to things like software architecture, networks, cloud, and even back to my studies. Here is how I would describe my dream job: Building the software/infrastructure things of tomorrow, with an eye on operations and maintainability. I hope I managed to spark your curiosity.
