Dr. Elena Chandler

As a freelance translator, proofreader and copywriter, I have done monolingual and bilingual editing and proofreading, and have translated from German to English and from Dutch to English on various projects as a freelance basis to various companies. Areas of specialization include general law, patent law, IT, video gaming, medical and technical, maritime, philosophical and business topics.

As an in-house translator, proofreader and editor, I translate from German to English and from Dutch to English in a variety of areas of specialization including general law, patent law, IT, engineering, video gaming, renewable energy, scientific and medical.

During this period I was commissioned as a full-time writer and wrote two continuing education courses on autism to be listed in the California Psychological Educations recertification program. I also performed business analysis tasks, interviews, and other related writing tasks.

I served as only full-time faculty member for German in the Department of Modern Languages. Taught all levels of German language instruction as well as upper division courses. I developed both curriculum and testing materials for all courses. Supervised student teaching assistants.

I taught the first two years of language instruction for German as well as the intensive Dutch language course (equivalent of 2 years taught in a single year). Additionally, I taught German for reading knowledge and served as a teaching assistant for an advanced course in Celtic philology, history and literature.

I wrote technical documentation and marketing materials for the company's relational database management system. Duties were diverse and included writing primary manuals (2) for SQL based software including theoretical aspects of usage and developers’ tools; writing 9 additional manuals detailing how to use our rdbms product with other front-end applications (Lotus, FoxFire, Quark); coordination of beta testing for the product.

Doctoral thesis: ‘Trauma as [a narrative of] the sublime: The semiotics of silence’. A linguistic approach to trauma; based on a dynamic theory of subjectivity and the formation of meaning. Cross-disciplinary research in philosophy, psychology and linguistics.

German language and Dutch language education, linguistics, literary theory. Area of specialization was Germanic philology.

Chinese language and philosophy. Sub-specialization in neurolinguistics.
