Dr. Marcelo de Lima Leal Ferreira

I deepened my knowledge in machine learning, and I am applying unsupervised and supervised machine learning to identify and classify data clustering.

I participated in various international collaborations. I applied machine learning to statistically classify data sets into corresponding sub-classes and I analysed spatially-resolved spectroscopic data to infer the properties of astrophysical sources. I (co-)organized and planned two international conferences (in the Netherlands and in the USA) and I (co-)supervised the research project of three Bachelor and two Master students.

I developed a successful research project proposal, I participated in data acquisition process, and I calibrated big data sets. I used mathematical methods and software like IDL, MatLab, Supermongo, AIPS, and IRAF to perform data analysis and model fitting to infer properties of the objects of study. I published five refereed scientific articles (2012, A&A, 540A, 42L; 2013, A&A, 554A, 134L; 2013, A&A, 560A, 102M; 2014, A&A, 570A, 101M; 2014, A&A, 570L, 14R) and a PhD thesis.

I benchmarked and debugged an IDL code and produced a scientific article based on the results of my Master project.

I developed a code to analyse spatially-resolved two-dimensional data sets by solving complex equations to infer unobserved properties of the object of study. I performed data calibration and data analysis with IRAF, IDL, and R.

I applied the wavelet technique to identify and investigate low-brightness structures in astrophysical images. I developed and applied tests for the reliability of the method. I presented the results of the research in national and international conferences.

As a member of the outreach committee of the Astronomy department of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, I developed, organized, and applied educational and outreach activities that reached upon thousands of people, specially school-age children, in multiple cities in the Rio de Janeiro state (e.g. Casemiro de Abreu, Arraial do Cabo, Buzios, Cabo Frio and Rio de Janeiro).

I performed literature research to produce scientific texts for the "Projeto ViU (http://projetoviu.ov.ufrj.br/ )".
